TikTok LIVE via OBS: the setup guide — and why your products stop pinning to the basket

📅 Published September 25, 2026 ⏱ Read time 8 min 🌐 EN · ไทย · 日本語

Most sellers move to OBS for the picture and lose the basket on the way. The TikTok phone app does two jobs at once: it sends the video, and it runs the shop layer — the product bag, the pinned item, the flash deal. OBS does only the first job. The moment you stream TikTok LIVE through OBS, the video and the shopping controls live in two different places, and most of the "my products won't pin" complaints we hear from Thai sellers trace back to that one fact.

This is the operator's guide to running a TikTok Shop live through OBS: what you need, the setup workflow, the pre-live checklist, and the real causes behind ไม่ปักตะกร้า — products that don't pin to the basket. It is written by the room operators who run OBS broadcasts out of a Bangkok studio every week.

01. Why sellers run TikTok LIVE through OBS

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is free, open-source broadcasting software. It mixes several cameras, graphics and audio sources into one programme feed and sends it to a platform over RTMP using a stream key. For a shop, it buys four things a phone cannot: more than one camera (a wide shot of the host and a close-up of the texture or packaging), a live frame overlay — headline, coupon and gift badges that stay on screen for the whole stream — clean audio through proper microphones, and the option to send the same programme to a second platform.

It is not the only way to stream from a computer. TikTok ships its own desktop software, TikTok LIVE Studio. The three routes suit different sellers:

OBS carries the picture. The basket lives somewhere else. Staff the stream for both.

03. The setup workflow

TikTok renames and moves Seller Center menus without notice, so this is the workflow rather than a click-by-click path. Check the current menu names in TikTok Shop's own help centre in the week you set up.

  1. Build the live session first. In LIVE Manager, create the session, set the title and cover, and add the products or product set before you go live. This is the step that attaches the shop to the stream.
  2. Copy a fresh stream key and server URL for that session. Keys belong to an account and, in practice, to a session — treat a key saved from an earlier live as suspect.
  3. In OBS, set the stream service to Custom and paste the server URL and key.
  4. Build the scenes: an opening scene, the main host scene, a product close-up and a "back in a moment" holding scene you can cut to at once.
  5. Add the live frame as the top layer and keep headlines and badges clear of TikTok's own interface — the comment area, the product bag and the top bar.
  6. Test on a viewer's phone, not just in your dashboard: picture, sound, and whether the pinned product actually appears.
  7. Go live from OBS, then confirm in LIVE Manager that the session is receiving the stream and the product list is there.

04. Why products don't pin to the basket (ไม่ปักตะกร้า)

Basket pinning — ปักตะกร้า — is what turns a viewer into a buyer in one tap, so a basket that won't show is the most expensive failure in a selling live. Some causes sit on the platform side, so no checklist can promise a fix every time. These six account for most of what we see.

1. The products were attached to a different session

The most common cause. Products added to yesterday's session, or to a session on another account, will not appear in today's stream. Check the session before you check anything else.

2. The product isn't sellable right now

An item under review or rejected, out of stock, a variant with no inventory, or a promotion that has not started yet can keep a product out of the bag or show it greyed out.

3. You are streaming from the wrong account

Brands often run a shop account alongside creator, affiliate and MC accounts. Stream from an account that is not authorised to sell those products and you get a live without a basket.

4. Too many products, or too many pins

TikTok caps how many products a live can carry and how pinning works. The limits are platform-set and change, so check the current rule in Seller Center rather than trusting a number from a blog — including this one. Cut the list to the products the rundown actually covers.

5. Lag between the pin and the screen

A slow connection on the operator's side, a frozen app, or viewers on an old app version can make a pin appear late or not at all for some viewers. Pin a few seconds before the host introduces the product, and keep a teammate on a phone to confirm what viewers see.

6. The graphic and the basket disagree

Not technically "not pinned", but it produces the same comment: I can't find the offer on screen. When the live frame advertises a deal the basket does not show — because the promotion is not live yet, ended earlier, or applies to a different variant — viewers read it as a missing product. Lock the frame copy to what is actually set up in the shop, and change them together.

The failure that looks like a platform bug but is a staffing problem

One person runs the scenes, watches the audio, reads comments and pins products. At the busiest moment of the live — the offer reveal — they are switching to the close-up camera, and the pin goes in late. Viewers ask where the product is, the host stalls, and the team blames TikTok. In an OBS setup, pinning is a job. Give it to someone.

06. When OBS drops mid-live

Drops happen to every team that streams enough. What separates a blip from a lost live is what was set up before it.

07. Run OBS yourself, or hire room operation?

Running OBS in-house is realistic for a brand that streams often enough to keep one trained operator busy. The real cost is attention: one person cannot run scenes, audio, pins and comments while also noticing that the backup connection has dropped. The middle path is Room Operation — the brand brings its own host, and the studio provides the live room, the broadcast system and the operator crew. Brands without a host can hire full live production, which adds the MC as well.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do you need to go live on TikTok through OBS?

A computer that can encode video without dropping frames, at least one camera (a webcam works, a mirrorless camera through a capture card works better), a microphone, a stable wired internet connection plus a tested backup, and a stream key and server URL for the shop account from TikTok's seller tools. For selling, add a second screen or a second person to run LIVE Manager, because in an OBS setup that is where products are added and pinned. Set the OBS canvas to vertical 1080×1920 so the picture fills a phone screen.

Why don't products show up in the basket during a TikTok live?

The most common cause is that the products were never attached to the live session the stream is going to: they were added to an earlier session, or to a different account. Other causes are products that are under review, out of stock or not yet on promotion; streaming from an account that is not authorised to sell those products; going over the platform's current product or pin limits; and lag on the operator's connection or an outdated app on the viewer's phone. Some of these sit on the platform side, so a checklist reduces the problem rather than eliminating it.

OBS or the TikTok app: which is better for live selling?

The app is simpler: one camera, and pinning happens on the same screen, which suits solo sellers and quick lives. OBS gives you multiple cameras, a live frame overlay, proper audio mixing and the option to stream to a second platform, but it separates the picture from the shop controls, so someone has to run LIVE Manager alongside it. For a brand with a set, a frame and a regular schedule, OBS is usually worth it; for a first test, the app is enough.

What should you do if OBS or the connection drops during a live?

Prepare before it happens: turn on OBS's automatic reconnect, stream at a bitrate comfortably below your tested upload speed, and keep a backup connection that has actually been tested. When a drop happens, switch to the backup, let the host keep talking through the current product instead of going silent, and use a rehearsed phone fallback if OBS cannot recover. Afterwards, log when and where it dropped, because a drop that repeats at the same point usually has a local cause.

Can you hire a live streaming company to run OBS for you?

Yes. The usual model is called Room Operation: the brand brings its own host, and the studio provides the live room, the OBS broadcast system and the operator crew who run the scenes, the audio and the product pinning. Brands without a host can hire full live production instead, which adds trained MC hosts. Limitless Studio offers both from its Bangkok studio as a certified TikTok Strategic Agency.

Let our Room Operation team run OBS for every stream.
